The Caribbean Shipwreck Museum and Research Institute is dedicated to the pursuit and romance of sunken treasure. Here you can find rare maritime artifacts all taken from the ocean floor. There is a special exhibit of items from the first slave ship wreck discovered in the Florida Straits, the Henrietta Marie.  The Caribbean Shipwreck Museum and Research Institute is located at Mile Marker 102.6.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was America’s first underwater state park and one of Florida’s most fascinating natural parks.   This preserve includes The Coral Reef Theater, reconstruction of a living reef in a 30,000 gallon aquarium, snorkeling, diving, glassbottom boat tours, kayak, canoe, & other rentals, camping, fishing, and more.

Dagney Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the American crocodile. Exploring the park´s trails gives visitors a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals. Over six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers.

Swimming with Dolphins has become one of the most popular activities of visitors to the Keys.

  • Dolphins Plus, offers an opportunity for participants to get up close and personal with dolphins and sealions. They offer a  structured swim which allows participants to have one on one direct contact with the dolphins, as well as the natural swim that allows the swimmers to snorkel freely with a group of dolphins. The sealion interactive program offers participants to get up and personal with a California Sealion doing hands on behaviors.  Dolphins Plus is located at 31 Corrine Place, Key Largo, FL 33037.
  • Dolphin Cove, is also a marine mammal research and education center that offers dolphin swims.  Dolphin Cove offers both structured and natural Dolphin Swims with bottlenose dolphin in their natural lagoon.   They also offer a unique “Trainer for a Day” program which combines dolphin interactions with a behind the scenes look into marine mammal care and training.   Dolphin Cove also offers Florida Everglades Tours which take you into Hemingway’s Pass, the spot National Geographic called “the prettiest area in the Everglades”.  Dolphin Cove is located on the bayside at Mile Marker 101.9 in Key Largo.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours – Sail aboard the M.V. “Key Largo Princess” and view the exciting, beautiful, underwater world of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the only undersea park in the United States. The boat is a luxurious 70-foot, glass bottom, 129 passenger, twin-diesel, aluminum motor yacht.  When you reach the reefs you will want to stand and look through the large viewing windows while your narrator tells of the wonders of the reef below. Totaling 280 square feet in area, the viewing windows are large enough for everyone to observe the reef simultaneously. your skipper will take you to the reefs where almost everything you see is alive: the reef itself, built of many varieties of living coral, teems with sea fans, sea plumes and hundreds of fish from small and colorful beyond description to the large species sought after by fishermen.  Located just behind the “Key Largo Princess” is the famous boat “The African Queen“.  This was the original boat that Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn used during the movie of the same name.  The African Queen has been around the world twice. Stop by to look her over for a unique nostalgic experience.  These boats are located at Mile Marker 100 at the Key Largo Resorts Marina.

Fishing is great in Key Largo. Deep sea and backcountry guides abound. Both private charter and party boats are available.  Many of the charters also offer sunset cruises.
